The Not-a-super-cyclone ‘Phailin’

According to the Meteorological Survey of India, the cyclone hitting the coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh cannot be deemed as a Super-cyclone because the wind speed was is in the range of 200-220 kmph, unlike that of 1999 when the speed was around 260 kmph. Whatever be the speed, 7 lacs of people have been already evacuated from the coastal and adjoining areas that are being hit by the cyclone.

According to the latest bulletin of MSI posted on 13th Oct ’13 at 5:30 AM, the very severe cyclonic storm, PHAILIN over south coastal Odisha moved north-northwestwards during past 3 hours with a speed of 20 kmph and lay centred at 0230 hrs IST on 13th October 2013 near latitude 20.0 0 N and longitude 84.5 0 E, 90 km northwest of Gopalpur over Odisha. The system would move in north-northwestwards and weaken gradually.phailin cyclone update- abhishek upadhyay
